......... day 47

Hello Again Kats & Kittens, Friend & Fiend,

Hmmmm…Look familiar?…Los Angeles 1918…Spanish Flu Pandemic…WEAR A MASK OR GO TO JAIL… Times have not changed.

ONWARD!

We have a dilemma…....we have…the Same Narrator, Same DJ, Two versions… “The Aging Young Rebel”…Mixmeister DJ FOOD put these together with the dearly departed KEN NORDINE, you remember “Can’t get sneeze off suede”… this first version is the original mix from DJ FOOD’s Kaleidoscope album, a Jazz riff….the second is Mr. FOOD’s Spaced out job from the XEN CUTS Comp. produced by record label Ninja Tunes…

This story is about an Aging Young Rebel called “what’s his name”, who wants to be different but stay the same…..don’t we all….but be careful what one wishes for…”betcha bread, you’ll pass the buck instead”…fine story here…even twice.

MC5 Kick Out The James

BETTY DAVIS (not actor) is a force, one does not meddle…ask MILES (if he were still above ground)…CARLOS SANTANA said of Ms. DAVIS”Indomitable – she couldn't be tamed. Musically, philosophically & physically, she was extreme & attractive.”..still is…… Started out Durham, South State…. Early ‘60s modeling, NYC, hangin’ in Village, multiracial art crowd, “light up we’re in COOLSVILLE”… met & married MILES DAVIS(19 yrs her senior), OIL+MATCH…didn’t work…She did intro MILES to JIMI HENDRIX & SLYMr. DAVIS’ music moved into Pcych-Jazz…thank you BETTY… Ms. DAVIS suggested “Bitches Brew” instead of “Witches Brew” to hubby, it stuck, Jazz history made. Ms. DAVIS recorded a number a very fine records…Betty Davis, They Say I’m Different, Nasty Gal (our fav), Is It Love? Or Desire.

Off a double comp This Is It! Originally on the Nast Gal album… here’s “F.U.N.K.”.

Fun Fact: Mike Judge Presents: Tales From the Tour Bus has an episode devoted to BETTY DAVIS….check it out…anything Mr. JUDGE does is worth the trip. Cinemax we believe….on demand we’re sure…

Betty Davis Funk

Next we have a couple from a very Kool compilation Cold Heat(Heavy Funk Rarities ‘68-’74), from the fine folks at Now-Again Records(button below)…. Get this album…first SanBerdoo’s LIL’ LAVAIR & THE FABULOUS JADES with 1968’s “Cold Heat”.

Lil' Lavair & The Fabulous Jades Cold Heat

Slowing down with AMNESTY, “Free Your Mind”….big sound, on the edges of psych-funk….these Indianapolis, Flat State Kats played funk as it should…without remorse…

Amnesty Free Your Mind

Switching gears we head into UK Punkland circa ‘77….Surrey…THE MEMBERS start out Punks but expand their sound with reggae beats & horns… they integrate well, hang with RAMONES, BLONDIE, IGGY, even TOM PETTY (not sure how that works)….some SoCal Motel Skullduggery…The Yusze…. sold well enough to keep going, they still tour….

from the One Law LP…we present “Chelsea Aggro”….oy!

The Members Chelsea Aggro

Going Socal Countrified with MIQUEL GARCIA & THE VAQUETONES This Orange County outfit played “Baja-Western” music(their term)….sounds about right to us…

SIA is next…weirdo-a go-go…love this singer & her visual antics…so secret….so mysterious! Adelaide, OZ starts her journey, (by the by, Adelaide is home to the world’s largest Rocking Horse)…see? Post-HS, she moves to London, sings backup for JAMIROQUAI, remember them?, giant hat, Acid Jazz….Boyguy dies in car crash, sadness follows…friends say “stay with us in London”...does that, 6 years of drug haze searching for feels, brightness appears, lead singing with ZERO 7 electropoppers….drives into solo trip next, makes the news…2005 landed in NYC….got more famous for very last scene of HBO’s SIX FEET UNDER, “BreatheMe” plays as the show fades to black…more fame bubbles up…we could keep going but this horse is getting in the way…..

From the electro dance LP This Is Acting…”Move Your Body”

…we crap you negative….this reporter witnessed this in ‘83

Time for FUN!….get your karate moves undusted….CARL DOUGLAS is here with “Kung Fu Fighting”. “Kats were fast as lightning”….yes indeed! One-hit…that’s all you get….this one tune wouldn’t allow Mr. DOUGLAS his fandom to expand, another song seemed of interest to no one….Mr.D still kicking’ at 77…. ”…it was little bit fright’ning”.

Carl Douglas Kung Fu Fighting
